What is Family Constellation Therapy?

What is a Constellation?

Simply put, a constellation is a pattern of interconnected relationships.

None of us lives in isolation. We are all interconnected, constantly shaped by those around us—family, partners, children, workplaces, and the wider systems we move through.

In each relationship, we take up a role, often without realising it. These roles aren’t accidental. They are formed through our experiences, our history, and the patterns we’ve quietly inherited.

Constellation work brings those unseen patterns to light.

The word “constellation” speaks to an arrangement—something both internal and external. It is the idea that relationships and influences can be set out, like a map, allowing us to see how the hidden interplay of roles has been influencing us all along.

A constellation session can’t rewrite the past, but it will change how you stand in relation to it.

The Family Constellation Therapy Process

Family Constellation Therapy is a brief, solution-focused, process-oriented therapy — something you experience.

In a session, key elements of your history—people, parts of self, even abstract themes—are set out like a map. What emerges is a living reflection of your inner world and how you relate to it. The process helps you get out of your head, so you can see the patterns and imbalances operating beneath the surface.

As the process unfolds, something shifts. What once felt personal or confusing starts to make sense. Relationships become clearer. Tensions that were buried begin to emerge. Hidden dynamics reveal themselves. And slowly, a different picture starts to form—one that often carries a deep sense of personal truth that’s hard to ignore.

With that shift comes clarity, stronger self-trust, emotional regulation, and the ability to respond in ways that feel more authentic and aligned.

Family Constellation Therapy helps change the way you relate to yourself, others, and the issues you’re facing, allowing you to engage from a more empowered stance.

When Nothing Else Has Worked

Family Constellation Therapy helps you untangle repeating patterns, shift emotional loops, and access insight that “talk” therapy alone often can’t reach.

Many of the challenges we face are not only personal. They are often connected our relational systems, particularly our wider family system.

Family Constellation Therapy generates a deeper perspective of intergenerational dynamics, beyond what we can access through our personal story alone.

This work doesn’t look for someone to blame. It starts from a different premise: that we are all part of interconnected systems, and we are wired for belonging. When that sense of order or connection is disrupted, it shows up—emotionally, relationally, and sometimes physically.

This method was developed by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger in the late 1990s. Since then, it has been widely adopted in many parts of the world.

People turn to this work for issues that feel stuck, repetitive, or resistant to change —especially when insight alone hasn’t shifted the issues.

In constellation work, we often say, “problems aren’t resolved, they are dis-solved.”

Who It Benefits

This work is for you if you notice you keep repeating old patterns, even when you understand them.

It may be helpful if you are:

  • Feeling stuck in the same relationship dynamics
  • Struggling with unresolved family issues or emotional pain
  • Experiencing cycles of anxiety, stress, or disconnection
  • Noticing patterns of overgiving, withdrawal, or self-sabotage
  • Carrying a sense that something deeper is influencing your life, but you can’t quite access it

It’s especially helpful for those who have already done personal development or therapeutic work and are looking for a different way to gain momentum—one that goes beyond insight and engages the deeper relational system.

REAL CHANGE. REAL FAST.

A study published in August 2025 found that individual Family Constellation Therapy is effective for adults with depression, anxiety, and stress. After an average of only 7.5 sessions, 88% of participants showed clinically signicant improvement. These findings position Family Constellations as a promising and effective treatment option.
