Can Traditional Therapy Keep Up?

Oct 13, 2025

You’re experiencing real-life emotional challenges. You’ve got big-time stress and lingering relationship tensions that you can’t seem to solve. Your calendar and your nerves are at capacity. You want change you can feel, and you want it now. And if you take the time and spend the money to seek help, you want a return on your investment. You want change that will last.

If this sounds like you, you’re not alone.

Many people avoid therapy simply because in traditional models, meaningful personal shifts often don’t appear until around sessions 13–18. And that’s only for about 50% of clients. So it makes sense that more than one in five quit therapy before seeing any benefit. That doesn’t mean therapy doesn’t work. It means the pace of life and the pace and cost of traditional mental health treatments are out of step.

Which invites a gentle, important question: what if there were a credible, carefully studied alternative designed to move the needle sooner—perhaps even in a single, well-held session?

That’s the simple, bold question behind our newly approved research study on Family Constellation Therapy (FCT), a systemic therapeutic method where insight often arrives fast and lands deep.

Why this research matters

FCT has been practiced worldwide for 30+ years, yet rigorous research is still badly lagging—especially outside Europe. Our mixed-method study is designed to test something specific and practical. Our goal is to understand what changes (if any) can a single clinical session of FCT produce in the short term and whether results can be sustained over time.

We’ll be measuring not just how the session felt for the client, but what specifically shifted for the,. To do this, we are using scientifically validated questionnaires and reflective interviews.

Who can participate

We are actively seeking adults 18+ living in Australia who are presently experiencing:

  • generalised stress, anxiety, or low mood, and/or

  • relationship challenges (personal, family, or work).

This study isn’t a fit for those experiencing an acute mental health crisis or in need of higher-intensity care right now. If that’s you, please prioritise your safety by contacting your GP, local mental-health services, or emergency supports.

What participation involves

  • One individual FCT session conducted online (approx. 60–90 minutes).

  • Brief online questionnaires before and after the session (stress, anxiety, mood, relationship functioning, overall wellbeing).

  • Follow-up online check-ins (short surveys and a reflective interview) to explore what holds, what integrates, and what changes over time.

  • Total time: roughly 5–6 hours across several touchpoints over 16 weeks.

No prior knowledge of FCT is needed. Curiosity and honest reflection are all that’s required. This study doesn’t promise outcomes; it measures them. What we learn together helps this work grow responsibly.

What you can expect

  • A respectful, contained therapeutic session with a highly experienced mental health professional focused on your stated issue or goal.

  • An opportunity to notice immediate effects and track follow-on shifts in clarity, emotions, relationships, and decision-making.

  • You will not be paid for taking part in this study. However, you will be offered a private, individual Family Constellation Therapy session (60-90 minutes) at no charge as part of the study protocol.

  • Participation is voluntary and you may withdraw at any time.

  • Benefit is possible but not guaranteed.

  • Professional researchers and a highly experienced, professional mental health practitioner registered with ACA and PACFA.

About the study

  • Design: Mixed-method (standardised measures + qualitative interviews).

  • Focus: Immediate and short-term changes after one FCT session.

  • Status: Clinical trial registered (ANZCTR: ACTRN12625000718448).

  • Privacy: All data is de-identified, which means no names appear in reporting. Your confidentiality and wellbeing are central to our protocol and oversight.

A note from the lead researcher

I’ve seen this unique method of psychotherapy deliver deep insight and lasting relief for many people who have become disenfranchised by the mainstream mental health care in Australia.

This project grew from questions I couldn’t ignore:

  • What if an alternative, under-researched approach could help people achieve real change, real fast?

  • What if people don’t have to spend months or years believing they are broken when the opposite is true?

  • If 100,000s of people report that FCT delivers meaningful change where other therapies don’t, then how can we measure the outcome of one session of FCT?

This study aims to scruitise the outcome of a single-session online intervention carefully, transparently, and with scientific humility.

I’m inviting you to be part of that inquiry.

With gratitude,
Diane Rogers, PhD
Social Psychologist, Researcher
